July 11th – day off and ferry to Lofoten

Found a nice guest house in Bodo with a very cheap single room. The young staff were great – and hugely proud of Lofoten and enthusiastic. I have booked again for my return to report back.

This has been the best day’s weather so far. Some cloud over the Lofoten mountains, but otherwise blue skies and light winds. Most importantly, calm seas for my 3 hour crossing!

The ferry was packed – and this is by far the busiest place I have been. I arrived early afternoon and pitched my tent on the site close to the ferry. I have just spent a happy afternoon pootling down south to where the road runs out at the fishing village of A. (Yes, A, but with a circle on top). I visited my second museum – the Stockfish (cod) museum. The cod is dried on poles like hop poles, then shipped to Spain and Portugal – Bacalao. Anyway, some pictures.

  1. Hi, you’re bringing back lots of memories! The Maelstrom, the big tide race in the Lofoton I told you about is on the southern tip of Moskenesøya. We’d got the ferry to Røst, got stormbound on Vedøya for a few days and then heading north, over the Maeltrom and passing Å on our way north.

I remember the racks of drying cod all the way north. We preferred to eat it fresh, but I seem to recall they claim there are 365 ways to cook it, a different one for each day of the year.

And I told you how good the weather was (generally!) on Lofoton.

    Have fun

  2. The pictures look amazing. TdF is great too. What with your blog and the TdF highlights I’m getting a double dose of daily cycling updates. Keep it coming!
